Empowering Uganda’s Workforce for the Oil and Gas Sector

Uganda’s oil and gas sector is projected to generate 161,700 jobs over the next five years, with a critical need for specialized roles such as welders, Quality Control (QC), and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technicians. To meet this demand, TotalEnergies EP Uganda, in line with its national content strategy, has partnered with TASC to build local capacity through targeted training initiatives.

In response to the growing demand for certified professionals in the oil and gas industry, TASC recently launched a program to train and certify 30 QC and NDT trainers and 10 welding instructors. This initiative aligns with Uganda’s national content goals by equipping citizens with internationally recognized qualifications, ensuring they can compete for jobs in the sector.
The training program in Hoima emphasized developing local expertise in welding and QC/NDT, key trades identified by the Industrial Baseline Survey (IBS) as critical for the industry. Uganda risks importing skilled labor without such initiatives, undermining local employment opportunities.
Program Objectives
  1. Increase Skilled Manpower: Train and certify welders and QC/NDT trainers to meet international standards, expanding Uganda’s skilled labor pool.
  2. Promote Inclusivity: Enhance employment opportunities for vulnerable groups, especially women in the Albertine region.
  3. Prioritize Safety: Provide comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) training to ensure safer workplaces.

HSE Training

The program began with a week-long HSE course to instill a culture of safety and accident prevention. The training focused on hazard recognition, compliance with safety rules, and enhancing overall health and safety awareness in the workplace.

The training aims to enhance and empower local companies’ capacity to provide their employees with internationally recognized certifications, as well as marketable skills and knowledge in the Oil & Gas sector in Uganda.

TASC’s initiative plays a pivotal role in ensuring Uganda has a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of its growing oil and gas sector. By focusing on internationally certified training and promoting equitable access, TASC is contributing to a more sustainable and locally driven industry, reducing reliance on imported labor while creating meaningful employment opportunities for Ugandans.
